My Guest Set on Sirius XM Radio Margaritaville (Channel 24) and online

Jimmy Buffett’s Radio Station, which of course is called “Radio Margaritaville” has a “Guest DJ” program called “Fruitcakes on the Radio.” So now, 15 years after the first radio show I hosted aired on the radio, I am honored to have a homecoming!

It’s an honor to be a “Fruitcake on the Radio” on Radio Margaritaville because in many ways Radio Margaritaville changed my life when I made that broadcasting debut back in 2003.

My favorite moments at a Buffett concert are when Jimmy pulls out the rarely played gems and perhaps it’s just the artist, his guitar and the audience. There are many special moments that flash through my mind when I think about concerts I have seen. Places and songs come to mind in an instant. Hearing Buffett cover a Bob Marley tune while knee deep in saltwater, or standing on the field at Fenway Park in Boston while he sang “Defying Gravity.” For a moment his voice broke and you could tell he was entranced by the wonder of it all.

That’s what Jimmy Buffett’s music and his entire world means to me.  Be fascinated with how fascinating everything is.  “Take it all in, it’s as big as it seems.”

I’m a Sirius XM subscriber and if you wanted to know about my tastes and personalities, you could just look at the channels I listen to the most which would include “Radio Margaritaville” (Ch. 24) and “Siriusly Sinatra” (Ch. 71) I love the classic songs of the American Songbook. You may think of Jimmy Buffett and crooners like Frank Sinatra or Michael Bublé as being from different planets, but I don’t.

What I like about Jimmy Buffett is his poetic lyrics.  I’d share Bob Dylan’s viewpoint that Buffett is one of our greatest songwriters. His melodies can be very unique too. Something I have noticed is that in interviews and things is that Jimmy doesn’t take himself as a vocalist too seriously. However, I think that Jimmy can indeed croon. When you put all these things together, songs that are incredibly original and a distinct voice, you have a one of a kind artist. Is there any artist quite like Jimmy Buffett? I’ll wait.

It’s great to have the freedom to play such a variety of music on this and I love that Radio Margaritaville has always and continues to be as Buffett himself once wrote “not known for predictability.” So maybe my cluster of songs here on Radio Margaritaville is just that – a tad unpredictable, but I’ll try to make the case for the “jazzy side of Jimmy.”

Listen today (October 18, 2018) at 11:00 PM (ET) / 8:00 PM (PT).

January 28, 2014 In 2011, I had the pleasure of interviewing Enoch Anderson, the very talented lyricist who wrote songs with Barry Manilow for 15 Minutes, the first original album from Manilow since the 2001 Here at the Mayflower. The experience was very fascinating and many people commented on how well-spoken
