Deborah McColl: Vocalist & Guitarist

The Kindred Spirit was a folk trio featuring Deborah McColl, Thom Tollerson and Phil Rolleston.  Deborah McColl today is a Psychotherapist.  She is also a singer-songwriter and guitarist.  Many people know McColl as the original “Reeferette.”  Deborah McColl was the first backup vocalist for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band from 1978-1981 and appeared on 5 of his albums and co-wrote two of his songs.

As a recording artist she released her solo album “Naked in the Garden.”  This interview with Deborah McColl was recorded the night before the 40th anniversary reunion concert of The Kindred Spirit folk trio.

John Oates: Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter, Concert Performer

JOHN OATES is known to many as one half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates.  Hall & Oates was called the most succesful duo in rock ‘n roll history by The Recording Industry Association of America.

Who is John Oates?  A man very passionate about music, and by music we mean all types of music.  In this interview, John Oates talks about his “other” project, The John Oates Band as well as the music that has moved him the most–all types including roots music, blues, bluegrass, folk, early rock and much more.


Gino Vannelli: Singer, Songwriter, Composer, Performer

GINO VANNELLI remains one of the most prolific recording artists in modern music.  Starting with his 1973 debut album “Crazy Life” and continuing all the way through the 2014 “Live in LA,” Gino Vannelli’s signature sound has included elements of everything from soul to soft rock.  His album “Canto” featured elements of classical, contemporary, pop, Celtic and Flamenco influences with songs sung in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

Vannelli is a philosophical man who seems to pursue the creative process with no restraint.  Join us as we meet the artist named Gino Vannelli.

Thom Tollerson: Vocalist & Guitarist

The Kindred Spirit was a folk trio featuring Thom Tollerson, Phil Rolleston and Deborah McColl.  Thom Tollerson is a very musical man.  In addition to being a music teacher, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Thom Tollerson also operates the 106 West live music venue and music school which is where this interview was recorded.  This interview was recorded to document the 40th anniversary reunion concert of The Kindred Spirit folk trio.

Phil Rolleston: Vocalist & Guitarist

The Kindred Spirit was a folk trio featuring Phil Rolleston, Thom Tollerson and Deborah McColl.  In 1968, a recording was made of one of their live concert, using one microphone.  In 2008, the tape of that recording was resurrected and the audio cleaned up.  It was that recording that provided the inspiration for the band to have a reunion 40 years later.  The three members of the trio were interviewed the night before their reunion concert.  Phil Rolleston was the first to be interviewed.

Cleto Escobedo III : Saxophonist, Bandleader on Jimmy Kimmel

Cleto Escobedo III is a saxophonist and vocalist as well as bandleader of Cleto and the Cletones, the house band on the ABC late night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”  Music is in his blood.  His father, Cleto Escobedo, a saxophonist.  Father and son can be seen and heard five nights a week nationwide at 11:35 P.M. (ET).

Jared Michael Hobgood: Singer, Songwriter, Entertainer

JARED MICHAEL HOBGOOD was a singer-songwriter, recording artist and entertainer who was well known for performing at the famous Irish Kevin’s bar on Duval Street in Key West, Florida.  This interview with Jared Michael Hobgood was recorded on the street in Key West.  Jared told us what brought him to Key West, and about his early days as a performer starting at age 12.  Jared described himself as a glutton for life and we think you’ll agree when you listen to this interview.

Many tourists from around the world have fond memories of seeing Jared perform.  He was part musician and part comedian and  a very fun-loving soul indeed.  Jared Michael Hobgood passed away on December 5, 2013.

Melissa Errico: Singer & Actress

Melissa Errico is an actress and singer of the Broadway stage.  She has starred in seven Broadway musicals and released 3 albums.  This in-depth interview explored the release of Melissa Errico’s album “Legrand Affair,” which is a collection of songs composed by Michel Legrand.  Produced by the late Phil Ramone and performed by Melissa Errico accompanied by a 100-piece symphony orchestra in Brussels.

“Legrand Affair” even features new material composed by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman specifically for Errico.  As Errico says in this interview, in many ways the focus was not entirely on her.  The album is almost like a duet of her and Michel Legrand.  This interview not only gives us great insight into Melissa Errico, a great singer…but, also helps us understand a little bit of the genius of this incredible writer of melody–Michel Legrand.

Martin Charnin: Lyricist, Writer & Theatre Director

Martin Charnin is an absolute giant in the world of American theatre.  The original lyricist-director of “Annie,” he has gone on to write lyrics and direct many musicals.  As an actor, he appeared in over 1,000 appearances of “West Side Story” on Broadway and on the road.  He has written, directed and produced nightclub acts for Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson, Marty Travers and Leslie Uggams.

Songs Martin Charnin wrote have been recorded by everyone from Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Rod McKuen and Tony Bennett.

Currently, Martin Charnin is the Artistic Director of the SHOWTUNES! Theatre Company in Seattle, Washington.  He remains as vital and active in theatre as ever.

Ellen Kaye: Night Club Singer

Ellen Kaye describes herself as a Night Club Singer.  She is also the owner of the restaurant Moscow 57 in New York, New York.  Her love for music and the restaurant business is a deep one.

From 1947 to 1996, Kaye’s family operated and owned The Russian Tea Room, the famed Manhattan Russo-Continental restaurant.  Scenes from many iconic films were shot in the restaurant including “Tootsie” and the Woody Allen film “Manhattan,” “When Harry Met Sally” and many others.

Ellen Kaye is also a recording artist who has released 3 albums.  As a performer she sings not only at her own restaurant, but also at celebrated New York venues such as The Metropolitan Room and the Iridium Jazz Club.
